The island is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Divers will find a huge variety of exotic sea creatures here, and the steep reefs and coral banks invite you to snorkel and dive. The turquoise sea is 25 – 28 degrees warm all year round, no matter what water sport you love, Zanzibar offers all possibilities.
Stone Town, the island’s capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is worth a visit: there is a lot to discover in the narrow streets of the old town with the former palaces, the colorful markets with the incredible variety of exotic spices, the small shops and cafes. It’s not far from your dream safari to the palm beach – the flight from Kilimanjaro Airport to Zanzibar takes about an hour – wonderful views included.
All of our safari destinations, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya, can easily be combined with a beach holiday in Zanzibar.
Highlights Zanzibar
Stone Town
Colorful – more colorful – Stone Town – that’s pretty much how you can describe the island’s capital in just a few words. Each of the different cultures gives the city its own “spice” – and so in Stone Town they merge into a unique potpourri of joie de vivre. Go on a journey of discovery in the narrow streets of the old town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992, and immerse yourself in a colorful world with many exotic sounds and sensory delights. From the rooftop bar to the steaming fish in front of the street kitchen at the night market, there is something for every taste. A wonderful place for idleness and letting yourself drift. You will also be fascinated by the varied architecture – with Arabic and Indian touches. A little tip: Look out for the so-called “Zanzibar doors” – elaborately carved double doors at the entrances to mostly two-story houses.
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park
The nature reserve is a real gem in the center of the island. During the hike with the guide through the Jozani Forest and observe the endemic Colobus monkeys or also known as red colobus monkeys). Walk through the mystical mangrove forests and listen to the sounds of the jungle. The Jozani Forest is the only national park on Zanzibar and a nice destination to meet the cute primates that frolic playfully up in the treetops. Also discover colorful fish between the roots of the mangroves and be surprised by the colorful butterflies in the middle of the rainforest. All in all, a nice destination away from beach life.
Spice Tour
Zanzibar lives up to its nickname as the “Spice Island”. Go on a tour and discover the history of spices, their cultivation and different methods of processing and use directly on site. Many of the tours include a tour of one of the “spice farms” – tastings included. Pure exoticism awaits you – an explosion for your senses of taste and smell. And it will also be colorful – because who thinks of black and white when it comes to exotic delights. See up close how chili, nutmeg, cardamom, coffee, cocoa, cloves and cinnamon are grown. Your guides will also provide you with a lot of insider knowledge, so you’ll know exactly which root or herb belongs in your home medicine cabinet or which gives a dish that certain something. Auf vielen Plantagen wird übrigens auch Obst angebaut, probieren Sie Sternfrüchte (Carambola), Avocados, Ananas und Bananen direkt von der Plantage.
