Frequently asked questions

Wie komme ich von Tansania nach Sansibar?

The pure flight time is about 20 minutes. If you are flying to Zanzibar from the mainland, you will usually depart from Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, the largest city and economic center of Tanzania. Your destination is Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar. There are also smaller airports in Tanzania, such as Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha Airport, from which flights to Zanzibar are offered. Please note that flight times and routes may vary depending on the airline. Alternatively, Zanzibar can also be reached by ferry.

Wann ist die beste Reisezeit für eine Safari in Tansania und einen Urlaub auf Sansibar?

The ideal travel time for a safari in Tanzania and a visit to Zanzibar depends largely on your personal interests. If you want to experience the majestic animal migration in the Serengeti, the months of June to October are particularly suitable. For birdwatchers, the months of November to April are the best, when migratory birds from Europe and North Africa arrive in Tanzania. Zanzibar is at its best all year round, but the months of June to October and December to February are particularly pleasant as there is less rain.

Kann man auch auf Sansibar eine Safari machen?

A classic African safari where you see large animals is not possible on Zanzibar. The island is home to a variety of smaller animals, including several species of primates, such as the endemic red colobus monkeys and the blue monkeys, as well as a variety of bird species. However, there are no lions, elephants, leopards, hyenas or other large predators that are typically found on the African mainland. That’s why a combination of Tanzania and Zanzibar is the best way to combine beach and safari.

Tanzania is the ultimate safari destination: the “Big Five” – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino – are at home in the country’s vast savannahs. The Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater in particular are known for their extraordinary wildlife and therefore offer excellent opportunities to observe these impressive creatures. But there is also plenty to discover away from the “Big Five”, from large herds of wildebeest and zebras to the colorful flamingos at Lake Manyara.

A few “animal highlights” also await you on Zanzibar: visit Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, for example. Here you can observe a variety of animal species, including the rare red colobus monkeys and bush babies (galagos). Zanzibar also offers so-called sea safaris. Here you board a traditional dhow boat and can watch dolphins in the wild or even swim with them. Snorkeling on the coral reefs around the island also offers fascinating insights into the underwater world of the Indian Ocean.

Welche kulturellen Sehenswürdigkeiten auf Sansibar sollte ich nicht verpassen?

A visit to Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an absolute must. The city is known for its labyrinthine alleyways, ornate wooden doors and the lively Forodhani market. The House of Wonders, also known as Beit al Ajaib, is the largest and tallest building in Stone Town and houses a museum showcasing the culture and history of Zanzibar. Right next to it is the Old Fort, the oldest building in Stone Town, which once served as a defensive structure. Another highlight is a visit to the spice plantations, where you can discover a variety of spices such as cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. An excursion to the Jozani forest, the last indigenous forest on Zanzibar, offers the opportunity to see the rare red colobus monkeys. After all, the slave market is a moving testimony to Zanzibar’s dark past. At this historic site, where the last slave market took place and where the Anglican Church stands today, you can learn more about the dark side of the island’s past.

Welche sportlichen Aktivitäten kann ich während des Strandurlaubs auf Sansibar ausprobieren?

Zanzibar is a true paradise for sports enthusiasts and offers a variety of activities, both on land and in the water. The crystal-clear waters around the island are ideal for water sports such as snorkeling and diving. The colorful underwater world with its coral reefs and a variety of marine life will enchant you. If you are looking for a thrill, you can try kitesurfing or windsurfing. Zanzibar is known for its good wind conditions, especially in the months of June to September and December to February. The shallow, calm waters of the east coast are perfect for stand-up paddling, while the waves on the north and west coasts are ideal for surfers. In the countryside, you can take a bike tour along the coast or a hike through the Jozani forest, where you can discover the local flora and fauna. For golf lovers, there is even an 18-hole golf course near Stone Town. Many lodges and resorts also offer yoga or meditation on the beach.

From the local cuisine, which combines the diverse flavors of Africa, Arabia and India, to the exotic spices that make Zanzibar a “spice paradise”, Zanzibar offers a unique culinary experience. The smell of spices is heavy in the air as soon as you enter the spice plantations. Cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and cardamom are just some of the spices that grow on the island. The spice plantations are a must for every visitor and offer an adventure for the senses, where you can taste the spices directly.

Spices Zanzibar

Zanzibar is also known for its seafood. Freshly caught fish, lobster, prawns and squid are offered in the restaurants on the coast, often seasoned with local spices and accompanied by rice and coconut sauce. Another highlight is the traditional Zanzibar dish “pilau”, a well-seasoned stew with meat and rice. The streets of Zanzibar City are a culinary adventure in themselves. At the street stalls you can try “Zanzibar Pizza”, a kind of stuffed pancake, or “Urojo”, a spicy soup with mango sauce and various toppings. And don’t forget to round off the day with a glass of the famous Zanzibar tea, spiced with cloves, cinnamon and cardamom. Whether you’re a foodie or just want to sample the local flavors, Zanzibar is a feast for all the senses, reflecting the island’s rich culture and history.

Zanzibar, also known as Zanzibar, is not just an island, but an entire archipelago located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania. In addition to the main island of Unguja, which is often mistakenly referred to as the whole of Zanzibar, there are several neighboring islands that make up the charm and versatility of this tropical paradise. What they all have in common: Relaxed barefoot flair and a casual beach feeling.

Pemba

Pemba, the largest neighboring island in the northwest of Unguja (“Zanzibar”), is a jewel in the Indian Ocean that is often referred to as the “green island”. It owes this name to its lush vegetation, which ranges from mangrove forests on the coasts to dense tropical rainforests in the interior of the island. Its hilly landscape is criss-crossed by deep valleys and is characterized by extensive spice plantations, which make up an important part of the island’s economy. Spices such as cloves, pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and vanilla are grown here in large quantities and give the island its unique spicy aroma.

Pemba is a true paradise for divers. The surrounding waters are home to breathtaking coral reefs that are home to a colorful and diverse underwater world. From colorful coral fish to majestic manta rays and mysterious sharks, the waters around Pemba offer an abundance of fascinating marine life that attracts divers from all over the world. Despite its natural beauty and the rich culture to be found in the traditional villages and the historic town of Chake Chake, Pemba is less touristy than the main island of Unguja. This makes it an ideal destination for travelers looking for a quieter, more authentic experience of life in Zanzibar.

Here you can get to know the simple, unspoiled life of the local people, who are known for their hospitality and warm smiles. In addition to the natural and cultural attractions, Pemba also offers a range of outdoor activities. Whether hiking in the hills, snorkeling in the clear blue waters or simply relaxing on the pristine white sandy beaches – there is something for everyone to discover and enjoy on this beautiful island.

Mafia

Mafia is located further south than Zanzibar. The island is a paradise for divers and snorkelers, who will find an incomparable coral reef experience here. The coral gardens offer a variety of colorful fish, from the smallest clownfish to majestic manta rays. The rare and impressive whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, can also be observed here in their natural habitat. The island is not only known for its underwater world, but also for its pristine beaches, lush mangrove forests and rich bird life. In addition to the natural sights, there are also historical sites to explore, including ruins of ancient trading settlements and mysterious burial sites that tell stories about the island.

The tranquil, natural beauty of Mafia makes it an ideal place for nature lovers and adventurers. Here, visitors can experience the island’s unique flora and fauna while hiking through the dense forests and mangroves.

It is also possible to learn more about the local culture and the traditional way of life of the islanders on guided tours. The island also offers a range of accommodation, from simple beach huts to luxurious beach resorts, to suit the different needs and budgets of its visitors.

The local cuisine, which is heavily influenced by seafood and tropical fruits, offers culinary experiences that should not be missed. Mafia is a true retreat for anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse themselves in the peace and beauty of nature. With its unspoiled landscape and rich marine life, the island offers an incomparable experience for nature lovers and adventurers.
