Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Kigali Airport (KGL), Rwanda – transfer to the hotel

Our driver/guide will meet you at Kigali airport and take you to your hotel.  On the way you will get your first impressions of this unusual city for Africa. Depending on the time of day, you may have the opportunity to visit the genocide memorial, where you will gain an insight into Rwanda’s recent history. Alternatively, you can visit one of the lively markets or the Kandt Museum.

Day 2: Kigali – Akagera National Park

After breakfast, you leave Kigali and travel to the eastern part of Rwanda, to Akagera National Park. drive on a well-maintained road towards Akagera National Park. The l Park is  is about 2500 square kilometers in size and lies on the border with Tanzania. Bird lovers will be delighted, as more than 500 different bird species live there. There are also eland antelopes, duikers, reedbucks, warthogs, baboons, spotted hyenas, striped jackals, giraffes, elephants, lions and leopards. After your arrival at the lodge, you will go on your first game drive.

Day 3: Akagera National Park

After an early breakfast, you will set off on an exciting game drive in the northern part of Akagera National Park. The savannah-like landscape, the views and the wildlife will inspire you. For some time now, there have also been lions in the park again. In the afternoon, you will go on a boat safari on Lake Ihema.

Day 4: Akagera National Park – Nyungwe Forest National Park

Today you travel from Akagera National Park in the north-east of the small country to Nyungwe Forest in the south-west of Rwanda. After breakfast, you set off on the 8-9-hour drive through the hilly landscape of the “Switzerland of Africa”.

Day 5: Nyungwe Forest, chimpanzee trekking

The Nyungwe Forest in southern Rwanda is approximately 1000 km² in size and is considered the largest contiguous rainforest in East Africa. There are 13 primate species living here, including around 500 chimpanzees. This morning, accompanied by an experienced guide, you will follow the tracks of the chimpanzees into the mountain forest. With a bit of luck, you will soon spot the first primates! Watch the chimpanzees as they play, eat, louse, cuddle or even mate.

Day 6: Nyungwe Forest National Park – Kibuye

Today after breakfast you will set off towards Kibuye on the eastern shore of Lake Kivu. The journey takes in the beautiful views of the large lake with its many islands and the volcanic mountains. Around midday you reach Ihe Lodge in Kibuye, the most beautiful town on Lake Kivu. The lodge offers the possibility of a kayak tour or an excursion with one of the local fishermen.

Day 7: Kibuye – Gisenyi

After breakfast, your driver will take you to the jetty and you will board one of the fishing boats. You set off on a boat trip across Lake Kivu. You will meet the local fishermen and enjoy the view over the lake. In the late morning, dock again and drive the rest of the way to Gisenyi on the northern shore of Lake Kivu by car. Relax on the small beach or by the hotel pool with a magnificent view of the Virunga volcanoes.

Day 8: Gisenyi – Vulcanoes National Park

Today you drive towards the Volcanoes Mountains. You drive through small villages, past coffee and tea plantations and enjoy the view of the lush vegetation and ever-changing landscape. There is hardly any car traffic; bicycles are the main means of transportation for the rural population of Rwanda. In the afternoon you reach Ruhengeri at the foot of the Volcanoes Mountains.

Day 9: Vulcanoes Mountains – Golden Monkeys Tracking

Today it’s time to get up early, have breakfast and then drive to the starting point of the Golden Monkey Tracking. In small groups with a maximum of 8 participants, we head into the Vulcanoes National Park. Endangered animals live here. Only here in the border region between Rwanda, Uganda and the Congo are there around 4500 of these mystical golden monkeys left in the world. The animals’ habitat is the bamboo forests at the foot of the Virunga Mountains, and the ascent is comparatively easy. Alternatively, you can go gorilla tracking for an extra charge.

Day 10: Volcanoes Mountains – Kigali Airport (KGL), Rwanda

After a hearty breakfast, you will start your journey back to Kigali. Depending on your departure time, you will have the opportunity to take a tour of the city, visit the Genocide Museum or the Kant Museum. The driver will then take you to the airport in good time.

Location: Located in the quiet suburb of Nyarutarama in Kigali, Flame Tree Village features an outdoor swimming pool, an indoor restaurant and a terrace restaurant. Ruzizi Tented Lodge

stay: 2 nights

Location: The lodge is located in the Akagera National Park directly on Lake Ihema. The comfortable lakeside tented chalet is surrounded by trees and bushes. Facilities: The lodge has 20 tents and is equipped with a changing room and a spacious bathroom and shower. The lodge is powered by solar energy. The small terrace offers a view of the lake to watch the animals. Restaurant: The food is served directly on the water on a wooden platform and can be taken in the evening with a fire pit.

Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel

stay: 2 nights

Location: Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel is located on the edge of Nyungwe National Park with an idyllic hilltop location with stunning panoramic views of the rainforest and surrounding mountains. Facilities: The lodge has 12 red brick cottages arranged in terraces. The accommodations are spacious and comfortably furnished. Each room has a seating area with a TV, a fireplace, a private bathroom with a shower and a balcony with fantastic views of the tea plantations and the Nyungwe Forest. Free Wi-Fi is available to guests in public areas. After an eventful day in Nyungwe National Park, end the evening in front of the cosy log fire, in the hotel’s restaurant or with a drink at the bar. Restaurant: The restaurant offers a variety of meals of various national and international tastes. Barbecue facilities are also available. Activities: The property is great for chimpanzee trekking, the Canopy Walk – a hike through the rainforest on a 2km suspension bridge – or a visit to a tea farm.

Cormoran Lodge

stay: 1 night

Location: Cormoran Lodge is located in the western province of Kibuye, in an unparalleled location on Lake Kivu. Lake Kivu forms the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is located in the Albertine Rift. Facilities: The lodge consists of five cabins and seven rooms, built entirely of wood and stone. All rooms offer a high standard of comfort and are furnished in a rustic and authentic style. They are equipped with television, Wi-Fi, mini-fridge, bath/shower and a terrace or balcony. The elevated chalets as well as the panoramic restaurant all have a breathtaking view of Lake Kivu and sometimes even of the active Nyiragongo volcano in neighbouring Congo. A small path leads down to the beach, where sunbeds and beach towels are available. Restaurant: The restaurant offers an eclectic selection of dishes and cool drinks. Activities: There are some canoes available in the boathouse, which can be rented for a fee.

Location: On the shores of Lake Kivu lies the quiet, small paradise – The Resort Lake Kivu. The adjoining garden extends all the way to the lake. Amarembo Gorilla Lodge

stay: 2 nights

Location: Amarembo Gorilla Village Lodge is a luxury accommodation in Musanza district in the Northern Province of Rwanda. With a great view of the volcanoes, the lodge is close to a starting point for gorilla trekking. Accommodation: 10 luxurious and comfortably furnished rooms in traditional, modern Rwandan style are available to guests. All rooms are equipped with a double bed, mosquito net, flat-screen TV, flush toilet, shower/bathtub and a private balcony with seating. Restaurant: Various African dishes are offered in the main building. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can also be served as a bush or garden meal.
